Evaluation approach

All Innovation Programme and PiP projects are independently evaluated to understand what has worked, and what has not, and why.

You can view the reports, detailing the outcomes for each project, on the individual project pages within Projects and Insights

The evidence from these reports is also informing our programme of learning events, guides and project tools.

Evaluation coordinators have supported us during Rounds One, Two and Three of the Innovation Programme (Rees Centre - University of Oxford for Round One and Opcit Research for Round Two and Three). The evaluation coordinators

Independent evaluation organisations, including universities, are working with projects to underake evaluations. They are:

Final evaluation reports for all Round One projects are available on each project’s page. Interim evaluation reports for Round Two projects are expected to be available in January 2019, with final reports published in summer 2020.

Evaluation coordinators

Evaluation coordinators have supported us during Rounds One and Two of the Innovation Programme (Rees Centre for Round One and Opcit Research for Round Two). The evaluation coordinators:

  • oversee the progress of evaluations, bringing together data to demonstrate progress towards the Innovation Programme and PiP objectives
  • assure the quality of the evaluation plans to ensure that they don’t only serve the project’s specific needs, but also contribute to our goal of a national evaluation
  • support the development of the evidence base for the What Works Centre, and the development of a culture of evidence-based practice in children’s social care

The DfE oversee this process through the Evaluation Advisory Board: board members include Isabelle Trowler, the Chief Social Worker, representatives from the What Work Centre incubator and their research partner, as well as key senior officials.
